Although the band members originally used the metaphor of a relationship in turmoil to explore their feelings about the group potentially breaking up, they’ve since acknowledged that listeners can also interpret it as a call for all people to come together and change the world for the better. This song actually has multiple meanings. No list of songs about changing the world would be complete without this simple masterpiece. If you ever feel as though changing the world is an unrealistic dream or ideal, these songs may change (no pun intended) your mind: 11. This song expresses the belief that sometimes societal change occurs when large numbers of people decide they’re tired of struggling against injustices. “Talkin’ About a Revolution” by Tracy Chapman Luckily, it’s also an optimistic call for change. The gentle smoothness of this beloved Marvin Gaye song doesn’t prevent it from being a sharp attack on those who allow systemic violence in society to persist. “Peace Train” by Cat StevensĪfter the 1960s ended, Cat Stevens released this song celebrating the hope that society would continue to become more peaceful for everyone. This is a particularly strong example of a song about social change because Sam Cooke wrote it after the owners of a “whites only” motel refused to let him, his wife, and his band stay there. “The Times They Are-a-Changin’” by Bob Dylanīob Dylan’s classic practically serves as a mission statement for those promoting social change in the 1960s. Numerous popular musicians have used their skills as songwriters and performers to call for social change in songs such as: 6. Sometimes you have to forget about those expectations and pursue your dreams instead. “My Life” by Billy JoelĪs this song points out, sometimes changing your life in a positive way involves deciding you’re no longer going to live according to the expectations others have for you. “Changes” shares moments of clarity that even if we look down on those younger than us, we are all changing in some way. The late singer-songwriter and all-around inspiration David Bowie released this song in 1971 as part of the album “Hunky Dory,” about his feelings on growing up. However, as this song about change reminds us, “life can change” in a single night. Some people find it difficult to make positive changes in their own lives because they feel that doing so always takes a long time. Peter Gabriel wrote it when he was in a professional rut and had to decide to change his life for the better by taking his career in a new direction, even if it meant striking out on his own. This song is perfect if you’re struggling to make hard decisions. Sometimes, you simply need to wait just a little bit longer for change to occur. This inspirational classic is often a hit at karaoke night for an easy-to-understand reason: It offers hope to those who feel stuck in situations they believe don’t have the power to change. If you need a little musical reminder that you can change something about your life that you’re not happy with, keep these songs in mind: 1. Along with helping you look back at the way your life may have changed over the years, these songs about change can also inspire you to make even more positive changes, both for yourself and for the world. The following are merely a few of the more noteworthy examples. In probably every single genre of music, you can easily find numerous songs about change. The fact that this experience is so common means it naturally inspires artists to create works about growth and positive change. Luckily, many of the changes we go through can be for the better. While this in itself is not a problem, having the application as a global variable can complicate certain scenarios, in particular those related to testing. The Flask application instance is created as a global variable in app/_init_.py, and then imported by a lot of application modules. There is a second problem that is not that evident. See how inconvenient that is? Wouldn't it be better if this project had all the authentication related files separated from the rest of the application? The blueprints feature of Flask helps achieve a more practical organization that makes it easier to reuse code. For example, the user authentication portion should work well in other applications, but if you wanted to use that code as it is, you would have to go into several modules and copy/paste the pertinent sections into new files in the new project. One way to clearly see the problem is to consider how you would start a second project by reusing as much as you can from this one. While this is a structure that makes sense for small projects, once a project starts to grow, it tends to make some of these modules really large and messy. There is a module for view functions, another one for web forms, one for errors, one for emails, a directory for HTML templates, and so on. So far, the organization logic that I've been following is based on having modules dedicated to different application functions. Thinking about these three subsystems that I have identified and how they are structured, you can probably notice a pattern. The core application functionality, which includes displaying and writing blog posts, user profiles and following, and live translations of blog posts, which is spread through most of the application modules and templates. The error subsystem, which defines error handlers in app/errors.py and templates in app/templates.The user authentication subsystem, which includes some view functions in app/routes.py, some forms in app/forms.py, some templates in app/templates and the email support in app/email.py.If you look at how the application is structured, you are going to notice that there are a few different subsystems that can be identified, but the code that supports them is all intermixed, without any clear boundaries. There are two basic problems with the application in its current state. The GitHub links for this chapter are: Browse, Zip, Diff. But of course, in true Flask spirit, I encourage you to take these changes just as a recommendation when trying to decide on a way to organize your own projects. In this chapter I'm going to discuss some patterns that apply to large applications, and to demonstrate them I'm going to make some changes to the way my Microblog project is structured, with the goal of making the code more maintainable and better organized. Flask is a framework that is designed to give you the option to organize your project in any way you want, and as part of that philosophy, it makes it possible to change or adapt the structure of the application as it becomes larger, or as your needs or level of experience change. Microblog is already an application of a decent size, so I thought this is a good opportunity to discuss how a Flask application can grow without becoming messy or too difficult to manage. Chapter 23: Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).Chapter 19: Deployment on Docker Containers.Chapter 15: A Better Application Structure (this article). This is the fifteenth installment of the Flask Mega-Tutorial series, in which I'm going to restructure the application using a style that is appropriate for larger applications.įor your reference, below is a list of the articles in this series. Clément’s sensitivity doubtless accounts for much of what we see here, but the rest is clearly Fossey’s own. And, Brigitte Fossey’s remarkable performance plays no small part in all of this.įossey’s is quite simply one of the most uncanny pieces of acting ever attempted by a youngster. In dramatic terms, it’s a fairly simple story, one whose connection to war’s ghastliness may seem slight at first yet, so subtle and thoughtful is Clément’s direction, and so insightful is the script Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost adapted from François Boyer’s story, we don’t miss a single telling point. When the cause of the commotion is discovered, the thoughtless and insensitive adults separate the children from one another, destroying their brief idyll, returning little Paulette to the state of despair and confusion from which she started. Stealing crosses from the church cemetery ignites the long-smoldering feud between the farm family and their next-door neighbors. Fascinated by the crosses she sees in church, Paulette encourages Michel to take some of the religious symbols to decorate their strange playground.Īs might be expected, such efforts lead to disaster. Collecting the corpses of dead animals, the children construct a cemetery for them in the ruins of an abandoned barn. Trying to make sense of her situation, Paulette, with Michel’s help, begins to enact a curious ritual. She also discovers companionship in the family’s young son, Michel (Georges Poujouly), a boy only a few years older than herself. Confused, helpless, and terrified, the child finds temporary shelter when a peasant farm family takes her in. One such refugee is the film’s heroine, Paulette (Brigitte Fossey), a five-year-old girl who finds herself an orphan when a German air strike massacres her parents before her tiny horrified eyes. Set in 1940, Forbidden Games recounts a period during World War II when scores of Parisians fled into the countryside as the German army approached the capital. The Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film in 1952, this deeply touching French drama has stirred the emotions of every moviegoer who has had the good fortune to see it. Few, however, have been as moving and heartfelt as René Clément’s Forbidden Games. And, as always, it's an absolute delight to hack robots and ride them.Over the years countless films have been made about war, its horrors and its devastations. Swimming can be a pain until Aloy assembles a gadget that allows her to breathe underwater - that opens entirely new biomes to explore, from oceans to caves to the underwater ruins of Las Vegas. Climbing has taken cues from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and it's easy to run off to the nearest mountain to scale it, just to see what's on the other side. The way Aloy navigates it is also purposeful. It's a real, thoughtful, inhabited place. But the creative team went even further in the sequel, from a lush Great Basin valley, to a Golden Gate Bridge reclaimed by greenery, to a bustling city nestled inside an array of ancient satellite dishes. The first game broke ground with gorgeous landscapes of frigid peaks and sheer desert canyons. It's just one of the many ways that Horizon Forbidden West continues the achievements of its predecessor, even as it seeks to improve upon them in every way. While she strives to reconstruct Gaia and rescue the entire biosphere from an external threat, her chief aspiration is to live up to the legacy of her genetic "mother," Elisabet.Īloy rides ahead of her ally, Varl, on conquered machines. It's a relief for Aloy to learn about her lineage in the first game, but it's also a burden. Aloy is, in fact, a clone of Elisabet Sobeck, a 21st-century scientist who devised a grand plan to restore the Earth after a terrible swarm of machines destroyed the planet. But over the course of the first game, Aloy comes to understand that she was created by an artificial intelligence called Gaia that needed her help to save the world. Venerating matriarchal lineage, they deemed her "motherless" and cast her out after discovering her in their sacred mountain. Recovering an ancient past and urgent purposeĪloy has no idea who her mother is - which is a big problem for the Nora, the tribe who found her as a child. Aloy arrives at the Daunt, a valley that resembles National Parks in the Mountain West. Just so blessed I didnt have to pay full price, I would have been real mad. Theres much more I am leaving out, but if I can sway someone from a bad vacation all this typing will be worth it. Left more stressed out than when I got there and I had just come off my first week at a highly demanding new job. Its not nearly as crowded but the water park is only about half the size. My advice is if you live in Michigan save yourself some money and stress without all the crowd and go to Zehnders splash village. I am sure this trip would have been fun if I only had one kid, but I dont. I say if you have more than one small child with you and you are easily annoyed stay away at all costs. Water park is impressive, water staff is actually competant. Most of the adults let their children run wild while they are off drinking. So many kids in the halls because of an interactive game that is played throughout the hotel, which isnt that bad unless you have a stroller and a small child walking with you. Breakfast buffet was horrible, small and cramped like most of the hotel, the line is so slow that your food is cold by the time you get to your seat. I had to ask her if she needed help, thats where I discovered she wanted our drink order. One of the waitresses came up to ourtable and just stood there silent, maybe she was used to mind readers. The staff was outragously rude, more than one occasion they would help someone in line who was behind us. The room wasnt so bad pretty nice, bathroom was a little small, but acceptable. Finally after waiting a few turns of the elevator doors opening and seeing it packed to the brim, we got to our room. We had a stroller with us and it was a nightmare. First off after we checked in the lobby was so full my wife and I got seperated until we hit the back of th elobby where the two slowest and possibly smallest elevators are located. So the next time i stay here it will be with my kids.įirst off, I am review this as someone with 2 small kids and 1 older child. I would recommend this place for the water park and for children. The fun level for children is a 10 while for adults its a 6 during the day and a 0 at night. The rooms were very clean and easy to settle in besides the early morning noise and pillows. The water park was a blast when it was open. I think the hotel should be more aware of its lack of adult entertainment.Īll in all this hotel was average to me. We would return to the hotel after a day of being out and come back to nothing to do when we really wanted to swim but we couldnt. If not the entire water park why not at least the outdoor pool. The complaint i have is why does the water park shut down at 9pm? why is the water park not left open for adults only after 9pm. The water park is really fun and the outdoor pool although small served its purpose. THEY SUCKED! The other thing that i found very awkward was that they have all these things for children to do yet they do hardly anything for the adults. There were 8 pillows in all in the room and every last one of them was the same. They feel like a sack someone filled with cotton balls and called a pillow. First of all the pillows are the worst pillows ive ever slept on. The biggest complaints i have about the hotel are as following. Im a light sleeper and the slightest noises wake me up so i might be a little biased but these were not slight noises. You can hear people in the hallway talking as if their in your room standing over your bed. I could hear all the footsteps of the child running around in the room above us at 6am or earlier. I reuse my towel at home why not here!Ĭons: The hotel is not very well insulated for noise. For example they have a recycling bin in the room along with a garbage can, the wall mounted air unit will automatically shut down if you leave the sliding door to your balcony open saving electricity, and they also ask you to participate (Not required) in a reuse your towel program where if you keep your towel hung up they wont take it but if you throw it on the floor they will replace your towels. They have ways to go green for the people who like to conserve. It had a mini fridge which made it really nice to keep drinks and food in the room. We had the breakfast buffet and it was one of the better ones Ive eaten at. The slides are not childish and will make any adult have fun. They have a lot to do for children with the arcade, Magic Quest, and the water park. Pros: This place is a lot of fun for kids. The place is nice and clean but there were a few issues. I stayed at the one in Traverse City, MI. The Great Wolf Lodge is a good place to stay for fun. The Game of Life has a grid of cells in which there are two states: alive and dead. “He did very serious mathematics, but with a flair and passion that was quite unique.”Ĭonway is most famous in the public eye for his “Game of Life.” He was inspired by John von Neumann and Stanislaw Ulam’s concept of “cellular automata.” “What separated him from other mathematicians whose work was also deep and broad and which extended over many decades was his free-spirited fun-loving and playful approach to everything,” Colm Mulcahy, professor of mathematics at Spelman College, in Atlanta, said in an e-mail. This is what I thought it could be like.” I love that Conway ended up with a wealth of famous insights, games and puzzles because he just followed his own curiosities, and also enjoyed sharing the wonders of math with others. I thought, “This is why I loved math in high school. Reading about Conway’s work and watching recorded lectures and interviews over the past few days, I appreciated that he shared his ideas with such enthusiasm, and in a way that could be broadly understood. We’re not talking about the stereotype of an academic holed up in an office who doesn’t want to be bothered in fact, Conway didn’t even sit in an office at Princeton, but could be found around the math department common room. I didn’t know Conway personally, but as a Princeton student I was aware of him as an eccentric campus celebrity. “ With the passing of John Conway the world of mathematics has lost one of its brightest stars,” Peter Sarnak, professor of mathematics at Princeton University and colleague of Conway’s, said in an e-mail. He inspired generations of students who encountered him anywhere from summer camps to undergraduate and graduate programs, and his inventive games and puzzles delighted the mass readership of Martin Gardner’s Scientific American columns. The legendary professor made many contributions to different areas of mathematics, with influential ideas that spilled over into quantum physics, philosophy and computer science. It’s a fitting description for Conway, who died April 11 at age 82 from complications of COVID-19. This is how mathematician John Horton Conway appears in Donald Knuth’s novella Surreal Numbers-a seemingly all-knowing force that brought all of the numbers into existence, whose methods were written down so others could deduce and explore them, too. "In the beginning, everything was void, and J.H.W.H Conway began to create numbers.” Anew numberis formedby rearranging the same three digits. Hints are available at the bottom and answers will be available in another post. I’ve included questions across all test topics-from algebra to geometry to logic.Īll of them are tough! Try them on your own. So here are 12 SAT questions that illustrate frequently tested ideas and ways of thinking that go beyond standard school material. But when they ask how it’s different, I usually have to resort to vague terms like "problem-solving, creative thinking, and word questions." I always warn new students that the SAT Math is unlike most tests they’ve done in school. To answer the tough questions, you need a combination of experience and a willingness to try things out. Even if you know all the concepts, you won’t always know which ones to apply and how. On the SAT, however, even great math students may not know where to begin. As long as you’ve studied the concepts, you know what to do when you encounter a problem. Most tests you take in your average math class are straightforward and obvious. Afterward, smaller sections of that area are exposed to five to six intensities of UV light from a sun simulator for a set time based on how quickly the panelist’s skin burns without protection. Then they soak in a tub of water for 40 or 80 minutes, depending on the product’s water-resistance claim. To check SPF, a standard amount of each sunscreen is applied to a 2x3-inch rectangle on each panelist’s back. We also do a different test to determine UVA protection, which we think gives more helpful results. “We use three samples, preferably with different lot numbers, of each product.” For SPF-a measure of how well a product protects against UVB rays-we test the sunscreens on fewer people than the FDA’s protocol calls for, and we test only after water immersion because if a product holds up on wet skin, it should hold up on dry skin. “We buy the sunscreens for our tests off the shelf, the way consumers would,” says Susan Booth, who oversees our sunscreen testing. CR members have access to our full sunscreen ratings. Below are some of the top-performing sunscreens in our tests, listed in alphabetical order within their category. So whatever your issues with sunscreen-whether you think it’s greasy or gloppy, you don’t use enough of it, or you’re just overwhelmed by the number of different products to choose from-our advice and ratings can help. Our sensory specialists also objectively evaluate the scent and feel of each sunscreen and provide a description so you can choose a product that appeals to you. (Protection against UVB is represented by a sunscreen’s SPF.) Both types contribute to skin cancer risk. UVA rays are primarily responsible for aging, while UVB rays are the ones that mostly cause sunburn. We’ve tested dozens of sprays and lotions in the lab to determine how well they will protect your skin against radiation from ultraviolet A and B rays from the sun. But we’ve discovered major differences even among products made by the same brands, and our tests have found that sometimes the protection offered by a sunscreen doesn’t match the SPF listed on the label. And Consumer Reports testing has found that you don’t have to pay top dollar to find one that works. Designed to provide the best protection for the face, lips, nose, and ears, this non-greasy solid sunscreen provides up to 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance, so it's perfect to throw in your bag for a day at the beach or in the park. There’s an elixir that can keep your skin from looking old before its time and protect you against the most common type of cancer-it’s called sunscreen. You can completely eliminate the fear of a hot, messy sunscreen disaster in your bag with a compact SPF stick, and this fragrance-free Clear Zinc Sport Sunscreen Stick SPF 30 from Babo Botanicals is a good place to start. Best of all, it's lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, so you can use it as your daily sunscreen without feeling greased or clogged up. However, it also doubles as a full physical sunscreen using zinc oxide. Along with calming niacinamide, the Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 contains all the vital ceramides (or fatty lipids) that your skin needs in order to retain its natural protective barrier. CeraVe is a dermatologist-approved brand when it comes to all things skin care, and that, of course, includes the brand’s lineup of sunscreens. If you were an impressionable teen in the late ‘90s or early aughts, the gateway pop-punk trio’s patented mix of syrupy harmonies and nonstop F-bombs hooked you in until you inevitably discovered better bands in your formative years. Like any 30-something with a one-time penchant for power chords and poop jokes, I’m a recovering Blink-182 fan.
